Children’s Program: Be a role model for the children of Sacred Heart Shelter! Help create a safe, fun place for children to just “be kids” as they build healthy relationships and explore ideas and feelings about themselves and others through play and activities. Children range in age from 0 to 12 years and come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. The Children’s Program happens Sunday through Thursday, 7:00 – 8:30 pm, and our children are always asking, “Are the volunteers coming tonight?” Help us to say, “Yes!” For more information, download the job description.
Office Support: Volunteers
are needed from 9:00 am to 6:00pm each weekday. The typical shift is 2 or
3 hours once per week. These volunteers provide a listening ear to homeless
callers who want to know the status of openings at the shelter. The volunteers
also keep statistics and provide appropriate referrals. Calls are also routed
to various staff members. This person will answer the door, help residents
with daily requests and perform other duties as needed. We like to think of
these volunteers as ambassadors of the shelter. For more information, download
the job description.
Dinner Cooks: Every evening at 6:00 pm we have a family-style meal at Sacred Heart Shelter. Individual volunteers or small groups (between 2-5 people) are scheduled to cook the dinner meal once each month or on-call. This consists of an entree, vegetable, bread/starch, and 2 gallons of milk or juice. We prefer that volunteers cook the meal on-site and provide the ingredients. This volunteer opportunity is great for those who want to get together with friends or co-workers and have fun cooking up a range of dishes. For more information, download the job description.
Board Member: Our Fundraising Advisory Board’s primary responsibility is to work with the Program Director and Fund Developer to raise money for the shelter. The board meets monthly and puts on two fundraising events per year.
Movers: On-call volunteers to help us pick up and deliver furniture when residents get into a new home or apartment. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet our residents and help them settle into their new homes! Scheduling varies greatly depending on need.
Cleaning Projects or Repairs: Every once in a while we need a motivated and energetic group to come in to paint, scrub, scour, scrape, mop, or sweep. Residents have daily chores and staff clean as well but the bigger seasonal projects need a work group.
Miscellaneous: Occasionally volunteers with specific skills do projects like tutor residents on job search techniques, help with our special events, or plant a vegetable garden. Do you have a particular skill or interest? Talk to us!
